The David A. Broome Summer Business Institute (Summer Business Institute) is a program of the Homer F. and Marian G. Broome Family Foundation (Broome Family Foundation). The Broome Family Foundation exists to equip and encourage young people and families, through educational, legal and support services, for lives of real value and significance - one young person and one family at a time.
Having recognized the need for Black and Latino young men and women in Los Angeles to develop digital literacy and the entrepreneurial mindset and the need to provide technology to address the technology gap, the Broome Family Foundation started the David A. Broome Summer Business Institute in 2011 at the University of Southern California (USC). The purpose of the Summer Business Institute is to teach Black and Latino youth in grades 9-12 digital literacy, the entrepreneurial mindset, self-responsibility, sound decision-making skills, and community involvement. These principles are taught over the course of 3 Saturdays during the summer with guided business development curriculum for participants to complete between sessions. The purpose is accomplished by combining instruction with project-based entrepreneurship curriculum, group work and including a mentorship component to the program.
The Summer Business Institute provides these services free of charge because we desire to serve low-income youth of promise, primarily Black and Latino youth, of the greater Los Angeles area who have demonstrated an interest in becoming the business leaders that will power the local economy and build jobs and opportunities for their peers and the next generation.
The David A. Broome Summer Business Institute was the passion of the late David A. Broome, whose unwavering faith in the young people that populate under-served areas all over Southern California, led him to believe that with the right mentorship these young people could be future contributors to their communities.
SBI would not be here today if it weren't for the tremendous efforts of our past sponsors. Their generous in-kind and financial investments made it possible for the SBI team to empower, encourage and equip young men and women of color between the ages of 14 and 18 to become sound decision makers and positive contributors to the communities we serve.
The Summer Business Institute Team is lead by a team of people with the education and experience to equip, motivate and educate African-American and Latino youths to consider STEM businesses and careers and develop entrepreneurial mindsets.
"I wanted to express my gratitude for giving my son Cooper the opportunity to participate in this wonderful program;he was excited to be able to learn new tools that he will use in a near future."
"Thanks again for the wonderful opportunity for my son Don. He's so excited about the program. I think the foundation is doing a fantastic job with our youth!"
It is imperative for our communities and that each young person and family receives excellent quality educational services and materials. Quality education services and materials are of such importance that they must be provided regardless of the ability of a young person or family to pay for them.
The money raised will go towards paying for materials such as laptop computers for each scholar, transportation to field trips, food, coding software, SBI staff, and $500 scholarship for the top scholar.
Every dollar counts, whether you can give $1, $100, or $1,000, no contribution is too big or too small. We hope that you can partner with us in making the David A. Broome Summer Business Institute possible.
